You need to know that there are several types of degrees for all types of studies, for example: Associate's degree, Bachelor's degree, Master' degree, Doctoral degree, and Professional degree.


If you like some jobs such as welder, chef, plumber and beautician, you can get a certificate. This type of degree can be gotten in two years or less at technical and vocational school and community college, but there some four-year colleges that offer these certificates.

Associate's degree:

If you want a technical career, you can get an associate's degree. you can get this type of degree in two years or less, it can get at all community colleges, some vocational and technical school and for-year collages. The following are the types of associate's degree:
  • Associate of Arts (AA): you can get it in social science fields and humanities.
  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS): this degree is offered for people that have studied at two-year vocational or technical programs.
  • Associate of Science (AS): if you study in technical field and scientific, you will be able to get it.
  • Occupational Degree: this degree allows students to get a job immediately. It is known as applied degree programs.

Bachelor's degree:

If you want to get this type of degree, you must attend a four-year college. It is known as undergraduate degrees. You also have to take general education courses, for example: math, English, sciences and social sciences. The following are types of bachelor's degrees:
  • Bachelor of sciences (BS): if you want to attain this degree, you have to specialize in sciences such as physical sciences, life sciences or the mathematical.
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA): if you want to attain this degree, you must take most of courses in the arts, for example: fine arts, music, humanities, or social sciences.
Some collages also offer other types of bachelor's degree:
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
  • Bachelor of Legal Letters (LLB)
There are many specializations in commerce, engineering, architecture and economics that are considered as a type of bachelor's degree.

Master's degree:

After you get a bachelor's degree, you can aspire to attain a master's degree. You have to study from one to three years, and you can attend graduate school to attain it. This type of degree can be required for some professional, for example: engineers, therapists and social workers.

If you decide to get a master's degree, you have to prepare for graduate school and it is important that you talk with your college advisor to take the right courses. There are different types of master's degree, for example: Master of Education (M.Ed.), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Master of Arts (MA).

Doctoral degree:

If you had wanted to get this degree, you would have previously taken your master's degree. However, there are some fields where you can attain a doctoral degree without completing a master's degree. This type of degree can be gotten from three to five years or even longer. There are two types of doctoral degree:
  • The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.): this type of doctoral degree is offered for students in the humanities.
  • The Doctor of Education (Ed.D): if you are a student in education, you can attain this type of doctoral degree.

Professional degree:

You must have a professional degree, if you are thinking for work in business (Master of Business Administration - MBA), medicine (Doctor of Medicine - MD) and law (Jurist Doctor - JD). There are specific schools of study, if you want to get this degree, but you must have a bachelor's degree.
